Frequently Asked Questions
Which anticoagulant should I choose for whole blood or plasma?
Whole blood and plasma come with sodium citrate, EDTA, heparin, ACD, CPD or Alsever's solution, and a few with potassium oxalate or sodium fluoride. Citrate, ACD, CPD and EDTA bind calcium (citrate reversibly, so it is the usual pick for coagulation work); heparin acts through antithrombin and leaves calcium available; Alsever's is a citrate preservative that extends red cell life; fluoride and oxalate hold glucose stable for clinical chemistry. Use whichever your assay tolerates. EDTA, for example, interferes with calcium- and magnesium-dependent reactions.
What is the anticoagulant ratio for whole bloods and plasmas?
Typical anticoagulant ratios are 9 parts blood to 1 part anticoagulant. Specific ratios are provided in the Product Datasheets and Certificates of Analysis for each product where applicable.
What is the shelf life of whole bloods?
For applications demanding fresh whole blood, we recommend usage within 5-7 days or as soon as possible after delivery. These products may be suitable for a longer period in other applications with less stringent requirements, though we suggest usage within 30 days of delivery.
Should I freeze whole bloods?
Generally, we do not recommend freezing whole bloods as the freeze-thaw process will result in red blood cell lysis. However, certain applications may call for freezing or other treatment of whole bloods or any of our other products. Our products are meant to serve as raw materials or intermediates and therefore may be used in a wide variety of end use applications.
What's the maximum lot size of animal blood products I can order?
Our typical animal blood product lot sizes range from 50 L to 200 L.
Are blood products aseptically collected?
Yes, depending on the species and collection environment, aseptic collection techniques are practiced whenever possible. In animal collection facilities where aseptic technique may not be feasible, materials are collected as carefully as possible by highly trained technicians. Animal blood products are collected in an abattoir environment.

Do you have processes in place for the proper segregation of animal-based products obtained from different species?
Yes. We segregate animal-based products by species in line with Regulation (EC) 1069/2009 and Regulation (EU) 142/2011, and USDA APHIS inspects our facility for compliance.
Can whole blood be shipped internationally?
We do not recommend shipping animal or human whole blood internationally. Because of the lengthier delivery and inspections required, international products generally require dry-ice shipping. Freezing animal or human whole blood lyses the red blood cells, potentially abrogating its effectiveness.

Depending on your intended usage, human or animal serum or plasma may be better suited replacements for shipping internationally because they can be preserved on dry ice.

If you have a specific need for whole blood rather than serum or plasma, reach out to our Customer Support Team for additional sourcing details.
